I look to the stars

This is what inspires me

I was reminded last night of something amazing that happened 54 years ago, July 24, 1969. Know what it was?

Three men made a journey, most people today don’t remember who they were or where they went. Or even why.

What they did struck a cord with every American and the rest of the world. For 8 days, these men traveled further than anyone before them. We put everything else aside.

Our breath was held, excitement of achievement was celebrated, our breath was held again, and we celebrated again.

🚀 At 13:32 UTC on July 16th, 1969 Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins & Lunar Module Pilot Edwin “Buzz Aldrin Jr lifted off from Kennedy space center for the moon.

🚀 July 20th, 1969 Armstrong & Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon’s surface for only 2 hours & fifteen minutes, total time on the moon, 21 hours & 36 minutes.

🚀 July 24th, 1969, 8 days, 3 hours & 25 seconds after leaving the safety of home, the world watched live on television as Armstrong, Aldrin & Collins splashed down in the Pacific Ocean.

We all sighed in relief...

The first picture of the far side of the moon taken by Luna 3, October 1959.

Today we watch as SpaceX achieves amazing things that were impossible 54 years ago, in part because these 3 men & teams across the world inspired us all.

One day, while I’m still alive, I hope that traveling into space will be more affordable and I can go. Until then, I’ll look to the night sky, at the moon and they stars and continue to be inspired.

Thanks to the Men & Women of NASA who made it all a reality. They chose to go to the moon, not because it was easy, but because it was hard.

Bill, The Boring Old Guy

"There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation may never come again.

But why, some say, the Moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas? We choose to go to the Moon!

We choose to go to the Moon ...

We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills,

because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others, too."

John F Kennedy Jr, September 12, 1962
