Why is it important?

This is an annual tradition that typically happens during our beach week vacation. Another great tradition my family and cousins families have done since we were kids.

My grandparents lived in Pine Knoll Shores, NC, and we would make the trip every year. We still talk about the adventures we had. Me being buried in the sand by my cousins, playing Jungle Golf with our golf shark Mom Mom, and all the snacks being eaten during the ride down.

Now we share these memories with our kids while they create memories of their own.

Embracing the family traditions

This year, my mom said since the kids were getting older, starting jobs and beginning to walk their own paths, they probably wouldn’t want to come to the beach next year. I was a bit shocked by that statement.

Beach week is a tradition. We gather, drink, eat and share memories of the past. Also, we create memories for the future. Though they may be getting older, they still enjoy the week. It’s a tradition they don’t like to miss.

If we let it end, we may never get it back.

The glue that holds us together

Traditions are important not just to families, it’s important to all of us. They may change year after year, but they still remain constant. Traditions are something to look forward to in our lives.

A time not only to create new memories, they are a time to share old memories. Thus, keeping the past alive. A free Slurpee may be silly to most people. It’s our silly tradition, and we’ll keep it.

What are your traditions? What are your favorite memories?

Unlike my free Coke Slurpee, memories last forever and are meant to be shared.
